The September Issue.

Has anyone seen "The September Issue"? It's a documentary directed by R.J. Cutler chronicling Anna Wintour and her staff's preparation for the 2007 September issue of Vogue, which weighed almost 5 pounds! I mentioned watching it in my rainy weekend recap. A few highlights...

Anna is icy and short with her words, but is still admired and respected. During one meeting with a designer (I can't recall who), she walks into the room and greets him with: "How's things." It isn't even a question - more like a demand - and she pushes her hand to his lips for a greeting kiss. And at an event a journalist says to her, "Many people say that you are an 'Ice Woman'..." to which she replies, "Well, this week has been very cold. That's all I can say." So icy.

I found the friendship between Anna Wintour and creative director of Vogue Grace Coddington refreshing. At one point Grace tells the cameras, "She [Anna] knows I am stubborn. I know she is stubborn. I know when to stop pushing her...she doesn't know when to stop pushing me." To me their friendship is real because they are real with each other.

One interaction that I did not expect to see in the documentary was between Anna and her daughter, Bee. (Is that not the cutest name?!) One of the camera men ask Bee if she is going to work with her mother/if she is into fashion. She says no and tells of plans of going to law school. Anna, meanwhile, laughs and tells Bee: "It's still early."

Anna and Grace both have intriguing stories, ideas, and dreams; I loved peeking into their world. I definitely recommend this fabulous documentary - especially with a glass of blush.

  1. Didn't it make you absolutely love Grace?!? And Bee was very cute indeed. I think it's cool she's not taking the easy route of following in her mother's shadow. Kudos to her! Loved the entire documentary too! xoxo katie

  4. Katie, yes! I adored Grace. Especially when she wanted to keep the camera man's belly in the shot. ;)Have you ever seen pictures of her when she modeled? She's stunning.

Han, I would love to watch it with you!

Micah, let me know what you think when you watch it. It was definitely interesting.
